  1. Hi,

Despite the fact of me having this writer for around 2 years now, today it was my virgin-journey in writing my very first DL disc, while I write SL discs on regular basis and not a single write session failed.

I use Philips DVD+R DL media and as I started burning (using NERO 7.2.0.3) it, I got the error message. Something like "no seek complete", whatever that means. I'm including the entire log for any of you experts who might figure out what's wrong. I'm going to mark with bold text the lines that I think mark an error, although I don't understand the meaning.
    Thanks in advance!

You need to use Verbatim +R DLs. Looks like a Media problem.

  3. While I waited for reply I also figured, by trying with few other burning applications (that give more clear message) that it's most likely media-problem. Shit...

I know Verbatim is great but they are still very expensive in Europe (+R DL discs). Oh well...I guess I should stick to proven alternatives, despite the costs...
    Thanks...

If you think they're expensive you should see how much the printable version costs and with so many new movies going straight to the bargain bin, the extra cost of making a DL backup is highly dubious.

  5. Well, it appears that the mentioned DL disc, despite of being labeled as "Philips" actually has D01 code, which seems to be manufactured by crappy RITEK. Anyway, after doing some research, it appears that the first two retail implementations of NEC firmware (2.16 in my case) clearly do not support +R DL media made by RITEK. But I think that Firmware 2.78 solves the problem. I'll flash my drive tonight and see how it goes.

Also, can someone around here explain to me what DVD-ROM "bitsetting" means, a term that obviously shows up exclusively concerning DL media ?

From Wikipedia: The Book Type is a field of four bits at the start of every DVD (in the physical format information section of the control data block) that indicates what the physical format of the disc is. Many devices will use this "Book Type Field" to determine how the disc should be treated.

One common cause of compatibility problems is when a device does not recognize the Book Type of the disc that has been loaded, most likely as a result of the device being manufactured before that particular Book Type has been defined (e.g., most DVD playback devices made before mid-2004 will not recognize the relatively new DVD+R DL Book Type). For DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL discs, it is possible to change the Book Type field value to the value for DVD-ROM (or in some rare and unorthodox cases, even the value for DVD-R) in order to fool older devices that do not recognize newer Book Type Field values (this process is known as bitsetting).
