I don't think XP would let you do that. I dont even think format.com has a switch for a quiet format. I think it always asks, but I don't remember.

In the old days I did something like that. A friend with Norton Ghost Enterprise ask me to create a bootable cdr for him. I wrote a few lines in autoexec.bat, put ghost.exe on the cdr and also an image file of a simple formatted drive. Enterprise edition had the command switches you could use that required no user input. So I created him a bootable cdr that would format his drive without user input. Pretty quick way to format a drive. I think all the personal ghost versions requires user input even when using command line switches.

Once a friend emailed me a little exe program as an attachment (we could that back then) and when I ran the program I got a DOS screen with all the format instructions going on and the counters counting up. It did raise my heart rate for a second until I realized it was just a prank program.

I still don't understand why in your case you would want to format on the next boot, unless it's on your soon to be ex-wife's computer.

    Good luck.

Could always try "Munga Bunga's Hard Drive Killer Pro".

Don't forget to test it first.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their "new hd install" tool .

Install , run ... it may ask for two floppies ... make 2 set's , just incase one fails .

Reboot pc ... most normal systems use the DEL key to enter bios ... tap it a few times as pc boots up .

(info found in most motherboard manuals)

In bios ... set floppy as first boot device ... set cdrom as second boot device .

DISABLE hd-0 (where xp os resides) ... xp has a habit of kicking in and ignoring the floppy .

Insert floppy , exit bios , say Y to save , and wait for the new hd install program screen to appear .

You get the option to re-setup the hd for your choice of os , and partition numbers , an their size's ... once that's done , it's off and running .

Eventually a screen appear's ... choose exit , and quit ... pc should reboot .

Re-enter bios ... cdrom as first bootable device (now insert os cd) .

Set second bootable device as hd-0 ... save settings , and exit ... pc will reboot .

Next should appear the os setup screen , running from the cd ... now proceed with install .

    ----------------

That's how to do it from dos ...
