Need Expert Help Or Advice ?

I will try and explain this problem in layman terms so bear with me please. I have 2 computers both exactly the same with regards the hardware and software the only differance is the operating systems, one is driven by Win 98 se the other Win XP. Now the problem ? I have been using Smartripper,DVD2AVI,Tmpgenc, from day one and have never had any problems until 2 days ago, on both systems Smartripper works fine but both dvd2avi and Tmpgenc freeze after about 2 minutes every time. These are the only 2 programmes that freeze on both systems. I have tried all the various versions of both programmes but still end up with the same outcome. I haven't added any new software or hardware recently except to change my motherboard but the problem was their even before I changed that. I was wondering if my fan would have anything to do with it, although the fan works I only have one in each system. Any kind of advice or help would be great, I'm desperate ?
