    I have a Samsung DVDR120 recorder and a Samsung DVD-S222 player.
I can back-up any comercial DVD that does NOT say NTSC on the back of the box.
Some of our DVD's even say copy protected on the box and if they don't say NTSC they copy fine. All of our DVD's are region 1 DVD's. The ones that say NTSC, when you try to record you get the "Can't record copy protected" or something like that.
Aren't all region 1 DVD's made for NTSC output?

A region 1 DVD doesn't have to be NTSC, but I haven't seen any that are a different format.

Some may be 'region free' or not have encryption. Almost any burned DVD would be region free, unless a region is assigned by the burning program. All burned DVDs would not be encrypted, that's only pressed DVDs, AFAIK.

If the DVDs you backed up were not NTSC, you probably wouldn't be able to play them on a standalone player, unless you have a PAL/NTSC player. More likely, they are all NTSC, some just aren't region coded or encrypted.

Can anyone explain the information on the back of the DVD box?
Like what does it mean if the DVD says region 1 on the back but doesn't say either PAL or NTSC? The DVD's that make no mention of either format are the ones I am able to record.

  4. While it doesn't have to be NTSC, if it's a Region 1 retail DVD, you can pretty much bet it will be NTSC.

First thing to do is find out if your DVD's are copy protected and what region they are. Download DVD Decrypter, install it, run it. Have a look at my screenshot, as you can see my DVD is region 2 and is copy protected. Try one disk of yours that copies ok and one that doesn't, what does it say about the region and protection?

    steveryan,

Will that work if I do not have a PC based DVD burner?
Mine is a set top standalone type burner.

    Thanks

You will need an internal or external DVD drive for your pc, doesn't matter if it's a burner or not. It will not work on a standalone.
