I've used a few programs converting AVI's to DVD's so i can watch them on my DVD player.
What do you guys think is the best converter ?
One that does the best job and does it at a reasonable speed.

By far the easiest and cheapest (FREE!) "all-in-one" solution out there. Best of all it gives you the choice to use not one but TWO encoding engines for encoding to DVD specs; FFMPEG (my choice) or Mencoder. The GUI has a good amount of options for minimal tweaking and even accepts AviSynth scripts! If you give it a try you'll soon discover it's rich potential.
A real no-brainer. -
What kind of AVIs? What does "Best Job" mean? What do you consider a reasonable speed?
I generally work with DV-AVI and I use QuEnc to encode to DVD compliant Mpeg2 video and AC3 audio. I then author in TDA. Encoding usually runs at about 12-15 fps and authoring usually takes about 15 minutes. I find this method gives me what I consider excellent quality in a reasonable amount of time."Shut up Wesley!" -- Captain Jean-Luc Picard

The simplest solution providing the best quality in most cases is to get a stand alone player that is Divx certified. Just burn to DVD as data and play. No conversion, no quality loss.
The next best method, for my money, is FitCD, avisynth, ProCoder (or ProCoder express or CCE Basic or HCenc) and DLP. Add some filters to add back detail and blend the blocking artifacts that all Xvid/Divx files suffer from, and you will get the best possible solution. The cost for this method is time. It may take 3 - 5 hows computing time per movie.
Simple one-click wonder solution at a cost is ConvertXtoDVD. I like this over some of the free and all of the commercial one-click solutions because it is fast, and because it correctly encodes 23.976 material as 23.976 with pulldown, not 29.97 as many others do.Read my blog here.
