mencoder conversions (semi)fail on an iBook

I just picked up a 600 MHz iBook, G3, running the latest flavor of Tiger. I have a dual G5 Powermac that I use to normally run ffmepgx on, so I know (at least I think I know) what I'm doing.

I installed the G3 binaries for ffmpegx on the iBook. I'm trying to convert mpeg2's to the mencoder version of XviD AVI's (I like the options that the mencoder version offers).

Even though this happens without a hitch on my PowerMac, on the iBook, it just quits without doing anything, even on the 5 second test conversion.

I was going to post that output in my original post, but thought that perhaps it wouldn't be needed/that I was missing something obvious.

Here's what was tried:
The original file is an MPEG2. I'm trying to back some stuff up onto DVD, and QT, even with the MPEG2 codec, can't play it (the screen freezes shortly after starting the file but the sound plays. VLC can play this just fine).

I've found that conversion via XviD (mencoder) allows for the best, IMO, quality conversion. It's then a snap to drop it into iMovie for editing and then conversion to a DVD. All of which works just fine on my Powermac.

This is the output of a 5 sec test clip conversion (which failed, btw) with only the "deinterlace" option checked:

If you use "DivX mencoder" does it fail in the same way?

It doesn't work, but it fails in a completely different way. Using the same input file, I ran the conversion using the DivX3 mencoder converter. Again, 5 second test clip, only the "deinterlace" option checked.

The conversion sorta worked, but only the audio was converted. If I played the file in QuickTime, I get a green screen with the audio track playing. If I open it in VLC, it's only audio, no video.

So is it impossible to use the mencoder versions of things with a G3 processor?

I just tried both of these conversions with a different file (another MPEG2). Both gave the same responses (failed with the same results)
