Some of the folks over at the rpc1 site have successfully installed the Pioneer DVR-K06 drive in a 12" PowerBook. This is a super drive that even reads and writes DVD-RAM, and region-free (RPC1) firmware is available on the same site. Apparently this is a drop-in replacement and it shows up as Apple supported once installed. Apple is using the same drive now in the latest iMac 24" machines.
The DVR-K06 can be found for something like $70-$80 at various online stores.
