ok. i hav used virtualdub before and it worked but somehow it seems i'm miss a file of some sort and i can't find it. when i try to open a file it says that format 'XVID' (unknown). then it says 'virtualdub requires VFW' and so on... I hav ffdshow, divx 3.11 alpha, and the divx codecs 6. if anyone knows whats wrong plz be specific because i'm kinda new with all this ^^;; thanks!

It is telling you exactly what it needs. There are two main types of codec for displaying video. DirectShow is the current method, however the legacy method is Video For Windows, or vfw. Virtualdub requires vfw codecs. Download Koepi's Xvid codec from the tools section. It contains both DirectShow and vfw codecs.

You could also try changing the fourCC identifier to Divx, or enabling the Xvid vfw in FFDShow.

Changing the fourCC to DX50 would mean that DivX 6.x would decode it. For some reason DXN didn't enable XviD decoding via VfW, but they did via dshow.

I would suggest installing XviD or enabling decoding in ffdshow rather than changing fourCC's.

There is a program that does this. It might be called FourCC Changer. The FourCC is a tag that identifies the type of codec used to compresse the video. Xvid and Divx are very similar, and often can be ready by the oppposite codec if identified correctly. Have a look in the tools section for things associated with FourCC. When you find it, change it to Divx5 and try again.
