I have a 8MB ADSL connection but how do I find out what I really have? When I connect up it always shows 2.2 Mbps in the bottom corner and when I download things the speed varies from 50kbps to 140kbps.
thanks

Huh? I've got a 448Kbps connection here and I get downloads around 44K.
Sounds like yours is way underspeed or you are on websites that throttle speeds.
At home I have 3Mb DSL and I see throughputs that match that speed. My brother who I kindly connected to it via the built in router and a long ethernet cable going two floors up gets good speeds downloading videos from the aviation websites he visits. While I was talking to him the other day he wanted some spyware checker to run. It downloade and updated in nothing flat unlike here at work. We are well past the distance limit So I suppose I should be glad I is reliable.
Install this free 10 day trial, set it up to work with newsgroups, select some binary NGs and let er rip, it will report speed somewhere in the lower left as I remember it.

I suggested this application as it will show realworld throughput
Or call your provider and have them check the connection. They should be able to view the modem and check it out that way. -
Switch to Cable or DSL. I got constant speed of 100.0Mpbs

ADSL is DSL, it pretty much meanshis/her download speed does not equal his upload speed. ANd the 100Mbps you get is probably between the router/modem and your NIC, not you downstream speed.

Vijaygunners, in addition to 3Simon's links, have you set port forwarding up? You're not saying if you're downloading from a website, or (legit) P2P, etc. My download speeds are about 300K from websites and ftp on a 3Mb line. If you go to http://www.portforward.com you should be able to find instructions for your router.
