Of course this is one of those "this has been asked a million times" sort of questions. Any responses is extremely appreciative. Thank you.

I recently just got done with my trial of CopytoDVD. I liked the simplicity of the program, unfortunately I don't really have the cash to shell out for the license...so my question is are there any free quality DVD Burning programs out there I could give a try? I know a lot of people use Nero and I have used it on my old computer for burning audio...but I've heard people have had a lot of problems with it...so i'd like to give something else a try.

    Thanks.

  2. IMGBurn is no doubt the best DVD burning tool out there.

It burns ISO images but if you have a VIDEO_TS folder,it can be converted to ISO either with IMGBurn itself or IMGTools "Classic"

For audio,Burrrn or EAC+CDRDAO (Best audio ripper) Your writer may even be supported by EAC's internal write routines, meaning you wont need the CDRDAO package.

For audio, data and DVD use burnatonce.

    Alternatively there's CDBurnerXP Pro,which I haven't tested yet.

People like Prassi ONES,but you will need to pay.Not much though.

What laspis59 said. And I'm wondering if you are confusing 'burning' with 'converting' or 'encoding'. They are different processes.

Burning is the easy part. If you are backing up your own DVDs, then the freeware DVD Shrink is still one of the best programs to use. If you use RipIt4Me or DVDFab Decrypter to disable the DVD encryption first and 'rip' the DVD data to your hard drive, Shrink works very well. Then you can burn the file to a DVD disc.

Or if you are creating your own DVD, you encode it to DVD compliant MPEG-2 video and audio, then you 'author' it to the DVD format, then you finally burn it to a DVD disc.

We have lots of guides for all these procedures, depending on the software you have available. If you want to learn more about the DVD format, see 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left. For encoding and authoring, see 'CONVERT' and 'AUTHOR'. All these processes can be done with freeware programs. You just have to read a little.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thank you very much for your replies!

I understand. I use DVD Shrink to compress and backup to hardrive unless the protection is getting in the way, then I go the RipIt4Me + FixVTS route, followed by backing it up to the drive with DVD Decrypter and then compressing it with DVD Shrink. Lastly I'd burn with CopytoDVD.

I've heard that DVD Decrypter has a method for burning a DVD, but rather that's using an ISO image rather than a VIDEO.TS file. Never done that though.

Well, that's good, you do have some understanding of the processes. DVD Decrypter can burn in ISO mode if it decrypts in that mode or has a ISO file available.

ImgBurn was created by the same person. It will burn in ISO mode or the latest version can accept a VIDEO_TS folder and burn that directly. There is also a version of Shrink that can use ImgBurn automatically: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=63869 This is a very good combination, along with RipIt4Me, to back up just about any of your DVDs and it is all freeware.

We seem to have a lot of misunderstanding about copying, ripping, transcoding, encoding and authoring. It does help to know the proper terms.
