    2. What actually is wrong with avi and mpeg in virtual dub? What happen if i have the mpeg file or divx file, can virtual dub read it?
    why dont they support it?
If it cant, can you suggest me one editing software that can read most of popular video format? i'm using virtual dub mod but i think it is a bit outdate.
    3. how do i rip subtitle out of vob file using virtual dub?
4.What is different between vsfilter and vob sub? I google for vob sub and got only vsfilter results. Which one should i use?
    thx

    Where to start ?

    1. You don't. You can use virtualdubmod (or better yet, virtualdubmpeg2) to convert the contents to another format by re-encoding. If you want the audio and video from inside the VOB, but with a lot less hassle, use VOB2MPG.

    2. Nothing wrong with it. Virtualdub does not read mpeg2 files, which is why there is virtualdubmod and virtualdmpeg2. Either of them will read both avi and mpg files. If you don't have the right codecs then things won't work they way you want. Use avicodec or g-spot to tell you what you need to install.

    3. You don't.

    4. They are just different programs to allow DirectShow capable players to display subtitles if they don't natively have that ability (WMP, for instance). If you look them up in the Tools section (to your left) you can read more about each of them.

In future, when you start a thread, try searching for it again and continuing it, rather than repeating questions in a new thread. Some of what you have asked here has been answered for you before.

/edit : clarified point 2 to refer to mpeg2 files, which is the cotext of the OP

I agree with all that guns1inger, especially about asking the same question in more than one thread. That is a violation of our rules.

But the main question is: What do you want to do with your video? VirtualDub Mod and VD are great for some things, but they are mainly editors and front ends for AVI encoders.

If your plan is to convert a DVD to a AVI, such as Xvid or Divx, there are easier ways. I would suggest ripping the DVD to your hard drive with a program like RipIt4Me or DVDFab Decrypter. Then you can use a converter program like AutoGK, FairUse Wizard or avi.NET to convert. They are much easier than VirtualDub for this type of project.

If you want to cut out a selection from a VOB, then VD Mod might be a good choice. It only outputs to AVI format.

If you want to use VD; As mentioned, a program like VOB2MPEG will join the VOBs into one file and make it much easier to convert.

For subtitles, I refer you to the subtitle forum. I rarely do subs, so I'm not much help there. The programs I mentioned above, AutoGk, FairUse Wizard, and avi.NET should be able to do them.

Not to bark up the wrong tree, but I thought VDub read mpeg files, just not mpeg2, correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct. It will read Mpeg1.
