I asume this has been dome before but there are always new members and new readers and I myself was a little curious.

    Quesion:
What's, and how much is really the difference in TMPGenc using Low up to Highest quality?

I was using a Pentium III 600 mhz with 256 Mb RAM on Windows 98 Second edition (Swedish lang. version) (Which I guess is pretty common) I was also having several applications running at the same time, Internet Explorer 5.0, Outlook Express 5.0, TMPGenc 1.2h encoding a MPEG-2 Movie and the TMPGenc 1.2h I did this test with... just to see how much time it took. So, this is not the most optimal and most stabil enviroment... Running only (one) TMPGenc would be better.

I took a 30 Second (751) DivX PAL clip from "Memento" and encoded it into 6 different versions using the TMPGenc VCD PAL Template:

Setting, Time to Encode (in minutes) , Filesize, Quality

    1. Lowest, 1, 5173 Mb, Ok
    2. Low, 1.15, 5173, Ok
    3. Normal, 1.30, 5173, Ok
    4. High, 2.00, 5173, Good
    5. Highest, 5.00, 5173, Good
    6. Motion Estimate. 1.30, 5173, not ok

Coments: Low and Mostion Estimate search had Distortions around peoples bodies and other edges.

I don't know what this tells you but I get this out of it:
I can't see the difference between high and Highest, but there's a big difference in Time there... So I'll be using High in the future (Any comments on that?) Filesize is not affected...

I'd be happy to get comments on this!
    Thanx/
    Lars

You know, I've heard the same opinion dozens of times on the forum, and I've always stuck with "HIGHEST" setting, and I'm averaging maybe 12 hours for a full movie. Not usually a problem, since I let it go overnight, etc.

But maybe you've convinced me. I'm going to see if HIGH is allright for me. I only still have doubts because I see blockiness even on some "HIGHEST" setting videos, in the darker scenes.

So I'll run a test tonight, and see what happens!

I use many time the Motion Estimate feature. It is very good if you got a clean source, like a DVD rip or a mpeg2 from satellite rip. Ain't that bad to tell you the true...
If you use it with the soft intra and non intra blocks fuction, you get amazing results!
But, this feature sucks with avi's...
About highest quality and High quality... I don't know...
I don't see any difference too. Why I keep doing it? Maybe because it is there?
