  1. Hi guys

I have used TMPGenc, Avi2DVD & DIKO to encode some AVI files.

I have authored some with DIKO, some with TMPGenc DVD Author ... All is well, until I try to play the discs in my standalone player ...

The picture (& audio) freezes for a second, then skips a few seconds, then carries on normally. Then freezes again etc. etc. I have tried the discs I burnt on another DVD player & the freezing/skipping doesn't happen, but I occasionally get a "chirp" on the audio & a few pixellated areas on the screen ...

The avi plays fine on the computer, the encoded mpeg & wav files created by TMPGenc plays fine & the VIDEO_TS files created by DIKO play fine, as does the TMPGenc DVD Authored VIDEO_TS files.

I am burning on Datawrite Titanium DVD-R discs.

I am hoping that it is just the standalone players that need a good clean, but if anyone has any other suggestions as to what could cause the freezing/skipping on one dvd player, and the chirping noise & pixellation on another player, I'd be very grateful to hear them!

    Cheers
    Ian

99% certain it's a player/media incompatibility issue (or the Datawrite Titanium DVD-R is geberally bad - I have no experience with it).
OTOH, using your computer and software players to verify the integrity of your files is futile. Software players are designed to gloss over any errors they may stumble upon.

Fill in your location ... if people know where you live (just the country is enough) then they can suggest what type of DVD blank media to buy.

I can tell you one of the best is Taiyo Yuden DVD-R but I live in the USA and if you don't then no use telling you more. In other words I only know of USA sources but if you live in say the U.K. then someone from the U.K. will have to chim in on the best place to buy Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs. Generally speaking you have to mail order them.

Anyways that is just one of a few reasons why filling in your location is important.

  4. Sorry about the location thing - All changed now!

I've never had problems with the Titanium Datawrite discs before. I used to use Bulkpaq (or however you spell it) ....

Hopefully, if I get a good DVD lens cleaner, that'll settle it down a bit, or get some good discs (I never fill the disc up, I always shrink it a bit so it doesn't get too close to the edge!).

    Cheers

How about that! I guess what country you are from!

Moderators ... where is my prize please!

    LOL

Seriously though I cannot stress the importance of using only the best blank DVD media. The sad truth of it is that most of what is out there ... is garbage.

In reality there are only two DVD-R discs worth buying ... Verbatim 16x DVD-R disc and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs (which still come in 8x as well as 16x).

Everything else is much less than optimal.

I don't follow +R media as I don't use it but the situation there is really no better.

I know it's a crazy thought but 98% of blank DVD media is garbage.

  6. I found the problem ...

It seems like it was the discs, not the player. I got some different (+r) discs & they worked fine on the same movie that was causing problems on the other (-r) discs.

    Thanks for your input.

I'm off to seek out some Verbatim discs now!
