  1. Hi everyone. I know this has already been discussed and I saw a thread about this as well, yet I'm still not sure which way to go.

From what I understand Procoder tends to give a cleaner picture. But I also see that procoder only allows you to do 2 pass vbr. Isn't that a serious disadvantage?

And what about options? It seems to me that CCE has much more options than Procoder.

Learn AviSynth if you want a clearer picture. Try LimitedSharpen or SeeSaw.

Comparing encoders is like comparing Pizza toppings - you can't get a group of people to agree on just one when you put the order in.

Try this ,some people reckon its the best MPEG2 out there and CCE is second, its totaly free and gives great results, it only has a two pass function but thats more then enough.

CCE is one of the few that allows for more than 2 passes. After about three passes, the law of diminishing returns kicks in, and although you might get a smoother allocation of bitrate as seen through a bitrate viewer, visually the differences are imperceptible.

ProCoder (full version, not Xpress) has far more options than CCE for filters, and is about on par for mpeg settings. It has a much greater range of output options than CCE, as CCE can only do mpeg, whereas ProCoder can do a lot more formats. This is especially handy if you work in an environment that requires multipe formats for marketing or distribution.

If you compare ProCoder Xpress to CCE basic you get a closer match in features, as CCE basic is also has a maximum of 2 pass for VBR encoding.

ProCoder is also a lot cheaper than CCE SP

From a personal perspective, I think ProCoder, while slower than CCE, does a better job with DV sourced material, including VHS restoration output. If you are looking for something to convert your AVI files to DVD or to use with DVD Rebuilder, CCE is usually the faster option.

  5. Z-C,

Unless you have $2000.00 to spare on CCE SP, CCE Basic only does 2 passes, which is plenty.
