Judging from my searches, I am a SUPER NOOB....

I have a stand alone DVD recorder (Lite On 5115) used to record tv shows from Tivo DVR.

DVD-R is the format I use. I've been recording shows and leaving my DVDs 'open', recording other shows at a later time. Once the disc is filled up, I finalize and enjoy. Done this on numerous discs successfully.

Recently, my dvd recorder (Lite On 5115) freaked out and my 'open' DVDs with shows on them, were no longer reviewable. My standalone recorder indicated the discs were empty- even though I know this is untrue.

A friend reviewed same on his computer and indicated that data was on them, but he could not view.

In the end, I pulled down firmware and still incurred the same problem. Since then I have replace with a new Lite On 5115. My issue has not come up again yet, but how can I get to the tv shows that I know I had on the discs? These were not finalized yet.

Do I have to get the computer programs referenced on these forums to extract them?

Please help. My wife is all over me for her 'favorite' clips that are lost.

I have been able to pull data off the discs with tools like DVD Data Rescue and WinISO. That's probably your best bet...then replace the Liteon with something that won't give you this problem again.....

It is possible that your problem is a media problem. Is the media on the lite-on list of "approved" media that matches your firmware?
