I record stuff from my satellite receiver to my pc but the files won't open with virtualdub or other programs so I can't really convert/compress them. They only play with VLC and other 'sophisticated' players. Also they come uncompressed and they are huge in size. What program can compress them? Here is one sample file as it comes from the receiver
.Thanks

they are compressed mpeg2 files (transport streams) - if they were uncompressed , they would be even larger ...
what do you want to compress them to ? ... you could re-compress them to xvid or x264 to make them smaller ...
Video: MPEG2 Video 544x576 (4:3) 25.00fps 15000Kbps [Video]
Audio: MPEG Audio 48000Hz stereo 192Kbps [Audio]
Subtitle: DVD Subpicture [Subtitle]"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I would like to recompress them and make them smaller, change their resolution and generally make them easier to play with the usual players

You can convert to avi divx, xvid with autogk or avi.net.
Or convert to h264, http://nwgat.net/guides.htm
