Hey, hope someone can help me out here.

I'm trying to burn a VCD in nero 5.0.0.3 (is there any other free software out there I can get instead? I don't want the new Nero cause it majorly messed up my mothers computer when I installed it) for some reason it will not burn because my burner is not showing up on the list. I hit the burn button and the list pops up.

It says "Choose Recorder" under that all I have is Image Recorder...now basically I have two burners one that is external which I do not use, and one that is internal..I have burned with it before. In fact, with nero, if I go to "CD-Recorder\Auto Detect", its listed there, but nero cannot find it.

Can anyone help me out with this? Maybe a different program would work better? I remember having this trouble a few computers ago with my external, but never with the internal drives I've had.

If it helps, my internal is a CD-Writer cd16f
my external is an HP cd4e series

If you have a newer writer you will need a more recent version of nero. I use 6X and it has no problems with my lg 16x burner. When I first got my older NEC, I think I had to move up to Nero 5.10 at first before it saw that burner. Check on the Nero site. I don't know if you can just d/L the drive profiles.

The other problem I recall is Nero released drive specific OEM registered versions of it's software that only worked with the drive that it came with. I don't know if they still do that.

actually, do you happen to know of another program which will burn to VCD just as easy as Nero? I'm kinda looking for something small since I am a dial-up user and don't have that much time to download stuff...also, its okay if its a few days trial, as long as I can burn the VCD.

    Thanks,

Kat - If you uninstall Nero and reinstall it, it will find all your burners. It's a defect in Nero that sometimes it loses track of burners when certain things happen to your PC. An upgrade will also find the burner.

By any chance does your mother have Roxio installed on her PC? Nero and Roxio do not play well together. I've never seen Nero do anything bad to a PC (well, I can say that for version 6 and below) and usually horror stories are the result of Roxio/Nero conflicts.

CDRDAO (do a search) is free and it works for some people. I gave up on it years ago because it didn't really support as many burners as it claimed to and I couldn't get it to work on my PC.

I recommend authoring VCDs with VCDEasy, not Nero. VCDEasy creates a BIN/CUE image file that you can burn with something else - CDRDAO (if you can get it to work), Nero, Fireburner, etc.

Ok, I'll try to reinstall it and see if that works. Should I perhaps try plugging in my external instead? I guess I can try it both ways.

What is Roxio? I don't think she has it, as I haven't seen anything by that name on the computer...but basically, I told the newest version of Nero that I didn't want to to be the default for photos, etc. And after I uninstalled it, all the desktop icons she had were broken icons, and I haven't been able to fix it since. I just don't want my icons looking like that lol. Plus, now her computer goes wicked slow where as before it was nice and fast. Even though I uninstalled it.

Now, you say authoring with VCD Easy, not Nero. Basically the files are already in mpg format and ready to go like the feature in Nero to burn. So really all I need is software to burn it. I used TMPG to create the mpg files and thought I'd be able to burn with Nero 5.0.0.3, but it can't find the drive. But VCDEasy doesn't burn correct?

If I use VCDEasy and create that BIN/CUE file, can I burn it with Nero even though Nero is only finding an "Image Recorder"?

Well, I'll try reinstalling the Nero I already have, then if that still doesn't work, I'll test out CDRDAO and Fireburner.

Thanks, as its a little confusing in the TOOLs area as to what will burn VCDs they all just say DVDs

Too bad your on dialup. We users on broadband sometimes take it for granted. Nero as a bundle is a large download. That is why I thought they might have a drive profile update only but I haven't checked.

Try this link it will point you to some of the burner apps. Some free and some trial. Many of them may be more reasonable in size for dialup downloading.

    Good luck

Yeah, I've downloaded a few different ones and looked at websites for others....I like Nero I can't help it, lol....I'm thinking I'll just have to head to my moms and download it on DSL then burn it and bring it home to install. - although I don't drive and hardly get over there...

    Thanks for the help everyone!

Sorry for the delay, but in case Kat9119 still cares...

Roxio makes burning software and competes with Nero. They don't play nice together. If you see something named Easy Media Creator, you have Roxio.

VCDEasy creates VCD or SVCD images in CUE/BIN format that you burn with something - Nero, Fireburner, etc. However, Nero takes shortcuts with the VCDs and SVCDs it creates and they don't really confirm to the standards for these discs. Usually it's not a problem, but it can be on some DVD players. Yes, VCDEasy doesn't burn. That's why I suggested CDRDAO, which is free, but it may not work for you. You get what you pay for.
