  1. This might have been covered before, I searched looks like a media issue? But here goes: I'm taking AVI files (XVID or DIVX), using WINAVI to create DVD's (just a quick down and dirty program) However, the Video folders it creates cannot be read by DVD Shrink, maybe someone can help me there?? I have Nero and Roxio, but roxio seems to be the one that recognizes these subfolder and I use it to burn the DVD.

I'm using all sorts of media, Imation, Staples (yes they are probably junk) Fuji. But the problems is the same and happens on all of my DVD players Philips DVD 642, Memorex cheap player. While playing the movie will freeze sometimes will continue where it left off, sometimes jump a scene and will do this intermittantly. I burn at 8X which is max for my recorder. Any suggestions?? Is it purely media related?

Also now that I have these DVD's burned, and I might be able to solve my problem with your help, is there anything I can do to salvage and reburn what I have if I don't posess the source AVI anymore?

    Thanks

Until your post, I had never heard of WINAVI. If you click on the link and read the reviews, you will find this comment was posted on May 27, 2005 -

"HOWEVER! WinAVI uses very high bitrates when doing the MPEG-2 encoding - often way out of official spec. This can lead to some serious problems that some other people have already commented on - specifically losing audio. "

This might well be the cause of your problems. Out of spec bit rates will cause weird behavior on DVD players. I'm a little troubled that DVD Shrink won't read your folders, which makes me wonder exactly how compliant they are. The fact that Nero won't touch what it produces is also a bad sign. You might try using another tool for AVI to DVD conversion.

Your media is, for the most part, low grade, as is your choice of conversion software. Not only does WinAVI have a habit od producing output that is not readable or in spec, but it uses dirty spamming techniques to advertise in this forum. Many hours of moderator time goes to cleaning up after these inconsiderate lowlife's.

If you don't have the time or the inclination to learn the better methods and fine art of avi-dvd conversion, use ConvertXtoDVD instead.

To make them compliant , I would frameserve the mpeg's from virtualdub to bbmpeg (avi2mpeg) .

Convert the audio to ac3 using besweet .
Author with ifoedit , and burn .

I have never had any problem's with mpeg's produced by bbmpeg when authoring any dvd .

Other tool's you could consider using to convert you avi's are super , and mediacoder ... there are other's of course .

You should alway's burn at 4x as it provide's better fixation and stability of burnt media ... burn as fast as you can if you dont care about it being there a week later ...

As for media , I have alway's stuck with tdk , until recently .

I had to travel 140km's , original purchase and return trip to replace them .

Tdk changed the look of the media on the printed side to a metal finish similar to silver on car's ... tested 3 disc's , nero said no flamin way mate , and spat them out .

Thinking it might be my system , I slapped a datastream dvd-r in , and away nero went without a problem .

As for the lockup's and skipping ...

Stick with dvd-r should provide less problem's ... and never burn more than 4.35gig to them ... some player's have issue's reading past this point .

+ , and rw's are better suited to pc backup's or console game backup's .

These problem's can also be due to some player's using inferior lense material's ... after a while ... 18 month's or so , they just die .

If the player is a top of the line model , take it to your local authorized repairist in your area , and get them to tweak the len's power back by 9% of current usage ... it fix's the overheating problem some player's have durring extended playback ... also known as the playstation 2 fix .

I now take my notebook with me to test media , network cable's before I purchase anything ... it's damn annoying , esspecially when I have to travel a minimum of 140km's to sort crap out ... and I dont get that back on refund's .

Yes , it's $40 in fuel I dont get back everytime they screw me over ...

  5. Well I tried ConvertXtoDVD last night that seemed to cure my problem. Must be WINAVI that was doing it, not the media as that wasn't changed. I will most likely stick with this for now. I was just looking for a quick and easy way to covert AVI to DVD without creating menus etc.

That might be the lazy approach i realize, there are better methods and tools. I've tried to use TMPGEnc n the past, but always gave up frustrated with long long rendering times only to have the audio out of sync. Maybe I'll play around with some of the other suggestions offered here.

    Thanks for the help

What media do you use ?

If you use a good software player and play back the output (video_ts folder) from your HDD, does it freeze ?
