RCA DVD player problem with DivX

I am using what seems to be a great DVD player. A RCA DRC247N. It seems to have been rated well and i have loved using it so far.

I recently have been trying to use DivX and Xvid CD-Rs. They seem to start fine although a little slow. But i have noticed that it skips a few seconds here and there. At first i thought it was my file. I used two different CD-Rs burnt with 2 different software applications. (I thought it was the CD-R.) The CD-Rs play fine on my DivX player on the PC but skip parts on the DVD player.

I think this may have happened also on an XviD disc i have, although i am unsure.

What could the issue be? Any ideas?

The first and easiest thing to do when a dvd player is having "read" issues, is to try a different brand/type of media. Some players are very picky about the brands/types they will read. I've even seen cases where TDK 8x media works fine, but TDK 16x won't work at all.

For best results stick with name brand quality media (TY or Verbatim are the most highly rated). For the most part, it is all just trial and error until you find what works. You could also try checking the DVD Players section to see what other users have reported having success using on your player.

It could be a lot of things. You need to download GSpot and analyze your videos. Any of the following MIGHT (or might not - depends on your DVD player) be problems for your RCA:
1) QPel (Quarter Pixel)
2) GMC
3) Packed bitstream
4) Video bit rates higher than 2000 Kbps
5) Resolutions greater than 720x576

It could be your media, but most likely it's something in my list.

The fact that they play OK on your PC proves nothing because how PCs play Divx/Xvid has nothing at all to do with how standalone DVD players play them. Standalones require a special chip for playback. Your PC just uses its CPU. Standalones also have firmware to control playback and this combination of firmware and playback chip, neither of which your PC has or uses, control whether or not they have playback problems with Xvid/Divx files.

Well i know it is not 4 or 5 on the file in question.

How can i check on 1,2, and 3?

In the future how can i make sure that it will work on a stand alone? (Just re-encode w/ AVI Re-comp?)

Well it may not be any of those things you listed.

At first i put a file on a Sony CD-RW to check to make sure it played without problems on the stand alone. It worked fine, didn't skip parts.

So i burnt on a CD-R (Dynex). It skipped. I have been using this batch of Dynex mainly for SVCD/VCD use with no trouble.

Could it be the media that is at fault?

After burning both files checked out on data verification.

I am trying my best to figure this out. This is what i have found. So far no problems viewing Divx or Xvid via Sony CD-RW.

But i have had trouble viewing on stand alone when recorded on 2 other CD-R brands. They are:

The Sony that seems to work with no trouble is:

Could it be that the media is inferior and that is why the stand alone is having trouble reading it? It randomly skips around 10-20 seconds. The info is there, it just skips for some reason.

Most likely a media issue as I stated above. The media you are using is likely fine for PC use. But you will need to find a brand/type of media that your dvd player can read.

Thanks KK. Could it possibly be the write speed? (The good copy made at 4x while the error versions made at 48x. Of course all files checked out ok when the data was checked.)

I am reading about CD-R media now. It looks like the only issue is how long the data will last on the CD-R...

Maybe i will try another media brand...

Burn/write speed shouldn't be a factor. The differnce in your burn speeds is due to the types of media used. RW media burns at slower speeds. You can verify the burns are error free using a tool such as dvdinfopro or Nero cdspeed.

Well last night i went to the three closest stores that carry media.

It was TDK or Memorex. I went with TDK.

When i came home i was disappointed to see that it was a CMC disc.

I decide to try it anyway at 12x and it played fine.
I also tried my other two brands at 12x and they all worked fine also.

So far so good. I guess i will see...
Now i wonder how long these cheap discs will last? After searching i see that CMC makes all of TDKs discs. Does that mean they are all at TDK standards or does that mean that they are inferior?
