I'm running Win2000 Pro. I get a reboot when I shutdown windows instead of a power down. I've done some searching on this and I still have the problem even after trying:

    1. System Properties ==> Advance ==> Startup & Recovery (I unchecked Automatically Reboot after System Failure).

    2. I've ensure in the BIOS that wake on LAN (it's not called that exactly) is disabled.

    3. Also, in the BIOS I've disable return to last state after power failure ... I was getting a boot-up with anytime I plugged power into my computer ... at least that stopped after disabling this in BIOS.

I really thought that 1 would solve my problem but it didn't.

    Any thoughts / suggestions?

Not something as simple as you've chosen restart in the box that appears after clicking on Shut Down at one point or another and it's still there ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I wish. No, it's "shut down" ... I've verified / tried that several times of the last couple of days.

This issue isn't really a big deal for me because I keep my machine up all the time. However, from what I've read this issue indicates some driver and / or hardware conflict with Windows.

I think I've seen this before and IIRC it was something to do with either mobo drivers or an incompatible power supply even. Basically windows would tell it to shut down but it wouldn't be able to cut the power properly.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'd go with jimmalenko on this. You likely have a program or process that is not exiting gracefully and still running during shutdown. You can go to Microsoft and check for 'shutdown problems'.

  7. Hi,
Once, I had the same problem with NT 4.0 workstations. I solved by replacing hal.dll file in c:\winnt\system32 by another version in sp6 package. I think it's a clue to you.
    Good luck.

Solved the reboot on shut-down. It was hardware. A "cheap" PCI firewire card that came with Pinnacle Studio 1 (which I bought 5 1/2-years ago) was the culprit. I replaced this card last night for other reasons.

Now my PC shutdowns on shut-down instead of rebooting.

One thing I did do however, was put the new card in a different PCI slot. Hmm? Was it the card or the slot? Easy enough to find out I guess, all I need to do is to crack my PC open again, pull the new card and put the old card in that slot.
