I am in the market for a new or used camcorder to replace my Sony DCR-HC 40. Since I shoot a lot of my sons sporting events, I wanted to get something with more then a 10x optical zoom. How much difference in picture quality will it make if I take a camcorder with say a 10x optical zoom & put a 2x converter on it as opposed to finding a camera with a 20x optical zoom. I would figure that there would be some difference, but will it be noticeable? The reason I ask is I am not finding too many models I am interested in with more then 12x zoom. It needs to be small enough to take on vacation.
    Thanks

    Some models I am considering
    Sony: TRV900, TRV950, HC1 and HC3

Some of the problems with those type of converters may be increased lens flare, autofocus problems, and lower light sensitivity. You may also have changes in the depth of field, especially up closer to the camera.

A lot depends on the quality of the converter. And the quality of your camcorder lens. You may also need to add a skylight filter, depending on how the converter lens is coated.

I would definitely try one out before purchasing. It might be handy in certain situations, but a problem in most others and not convenient to use.

  3. I use a SD card and took test shots on those floor model digital cams before I bought a Canon A700. You should able to use a minDV tape and check up the video quality in those Big Box stores.

There aren't many models with more than 10x. Even the Sony HDR-FX1 is 12x and that is alot of glass to haul around.

I understand your need but for me the critical lens issue is the wide end of the zoom. Many consumer camcorders suffer tunnel vision IMO.

  5. I have a Sony DSR-PDX10 (not a million miles different from the TRV950) that has x12 optical zoom. I took it on safari in Kenya with a x2 teleconverter and was very happy with it. (I also had a x0.5 wide angle converter, too). x24 is a lot of magnification.

If I get a chance, I'll upload some of the still images I took with it.
