Is there a way to get the 35mm equivalent of the zoom range on a camcorder? I try to look avoid looking at the "15x" or "20x" zoom ranges advertized on camcorders and instead look at the mm range. But how do you compare different models and know exactly what the zoom will be like? Does the sensor size make a difference?

If you knew the sensor size then theoretically you should be able to calculate it. That's how it works with DSLR cameras(full frame vs. crop sensors).

You need to know the sensor width/height and the focal length of the lens.
