check it out, this morning I picked my first harvest of hot peppers from the little garden in front of our house:

the roundish ones that look like tiny bell peppers are habaņero -- the hottest peppers in the world
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habanero
they don't ripen until they're picked. over the next 2 or 3 days they will turn yellow, then orange

the longer fruit that look like jalapeņos are serrano peppers
they are similar in flavor to jalapeņos, but not quite as sweet and they are usually a bit hotter

we're also growing jalapeņos, red and green bell peppers, and Anaheim peppers ("milder" hot peppers usually used for stuffing -- chile rellanos for example) http://www.lowfatlifestyle.com/flavoring/peppers_fresh_dried/anaheim.htm
unfortunately, none of these are thriving, so I don't know if we'll ever get a harvest of them

this is our first good sized 'harvest', up until now we've only been able to pick one or two every once in a while.

I hope the rest get some serious growing going on soon -- it won't be long at all before overnight temperatures drop to the freezing point at this altitude

  2. It's nice to see that other people are also growing
    their own food.

We have a huge garden and always have a heaping load
of veggies while other people just complain about the prices
    at the store!

    Whoa! Come on ice cream!

Next year look into growing Scotch Bonnets for a different kind of hot. The other problem with a small garden is crossing in your peppers, one hot pepper plant in the state will just about turn the sweets into hots

We almost picked some up this year, but passed.

    that's fine by me
we also have spearmint and peppermint growing in the same small area as well as gladiolas, marigolds and moss roses
so far, no minty peppers though....
those freakin' mint plants go nuts -- they tried to take over the whole garden. We didn't realize when we bought them that mint is a very aggressive weed. We just wanted to make some mojitos....
Next year, we will plant our mint in it's own oversized pot.

I like a hot pepper as much as the next guy, but it needs some flavor to it besides molten metal in your mouth. I have found that eating them when they are just under ripe ain't too bad sometimes. Other wise I perfer them pickled and slightly tamed down with the vineger.

For another treat see if you can find some "piquins" (I think that's what they are called) They look like a green peppercorn and I have heard from my supplier that they grow on a tree or bush. (his broken english and my ignorance make some of the finer points of communication difficult) But at any rate these little pea sized bastards are hotter than hell!

I learned first hand about the Scotch Bonnets frome a Jamacain that I work with. Big suprise! They have another treat that is somekind of root like a turnip or radish, he slices it, batters it and fries it up like somekind of fritter and maybe some other spices in the batter or sprinkled on. The kind of burn that keeps on giving!
