My Panasonic has just started to skip and sometimes fail only when using dvd ram. If I use a cheap dvd-r the recording is flawless. I have no rw discs to try, but am puzzled. Surely the laser writes in the same way unless using time slip? Or have I got that wrong. The unit is seldom used, and is a refurb, but worked fine for the first six months. The ram discs are panasonic, and have tried three new ones. Any ideas would be gratefully received

It could still be the laser, unless you're using the non-cartridge type discs (which I assume is the case: The old E55 that I have uses only those) and they have dirt or scratches on the bottom. The laser operates at a different wavelength for RAM media than -R media (635nm I believe). It's the same concept as a DVD player that will read -R or pressed DVDs, but not CD or CD-R media: I have one of those....
