That would all be under your audio card settings. Do you have the latest driver for your audio card or if it's on the motherboard, the latest driver for that?

Even my laptop has quite a few settings for audio. Check 'Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Audio>Sound Playback>Advanced'. There you should see all your audio setups for different speaker configurations. I can set mine for stereo or 5.1 or other setups. In the 'Sounds and Audio Devices' page, you would also see the balance and volume controls for the card outputs.

If you want more controls, such as equalization and bass and treble, then that is normally in your player. Some video players like VLC have a built in equalizer and other fine tuning controls for audio output. Audio players may have a similar setup.

I've Sigmatel audio driver installed, which is the only one. Which audio driver suits best for better sound quality? btw, I've set the volume controls as suggested.

I was looking for Stereo mix option in volume controls. I just've mono mix for now.

  4. It's more likely to be the hardware in the PC and the speakers that affects sound quality, not the drivers. If you use the wrong ones it might not even work at all !

Go to the manufacturer's website and look for updated drivers and / or a FAQ - but also check your application and make sure that if you're using say a software DVD player that it hasn't defaulted to 2 channel stereo.
