I recorded a few tv shows with wintv go using my PC (in mpeg1) a while ago and wanted to watch them on my Panasonic standalone player/recorder so I burned the files to a +RW disc using Nero Ultra. The burned disc plays in my PC as a DVD movie using VLC media player but will not play in the standalone Panasonic. The Panasonic is model DMR-ES35V multi format player/recorder. Plays all formats +/- R/RW VCD SVCD MP3 including RAM but will not play this nero burned +RW.

The disc I used was a Maxell +RW 4x. I've used discs from that same cakebox to record and play tv programs with the Panasonic machine but it will not play the +RW disc I burned with the PC using Nero.

When I insert the disc it tries to read it then says "disc not formatted properly - do you wish to format?" Formatting of course will erase everything on it so I select no.

I thought maybe it was an issue with disc finalizing but I didn't see a finalize checkbox in Nero when I burned the DVD. From the reasearch I did afterwards I found it isn't necessary to finalize +RW discs and unless I read incorrectly ....can't be done anyway... so that's probably why the Finalize checkbox didnt appear in Nero.

Am I doing something wrong....or is this Pansonic machine just not capable of playing +RW discs burned on a PC....or with Nero?

(The Pansonic machine DOES play Verbatim 16x +R discs burned with Nero Ultra.)

    Any suggestions appreciated.

I noticed that you burn with an NEC 3550. If you are using one of the modded firmwares that does bitsetting then you may have the same problem I ran into, +RW's get bit-set to DVD-ROM and wouldn't play on my standalone player but would play on my computer DVD-ROM's. If this is true try an official or non-bitsetting firmware.

I didn't update the firmware in my burner...but i'm sure it was done by the factory. The 3550a has been around a few years and the burn speed has increased through several firmware updates. Mine burns 16x +/- R/RW dvds and DL so I'm sure it has the latest firmware.

If I understand correctly....what you're suggesting is...if the +RW gets bitset to -R and the Panasonic sees it as a -R it would need to be finalized prior to playing on that unit. Finalizing can't be done in Nero when burning the +RW disc though so I'm stuck. I doubt the NEC factory firmware would have an issue like this...but...assuming you're correct...where to get a (trusted) firmware update that doesn't use bitset....? (or create other problems).

Thanks for the input. I'll do some more research re: 3550 issues.

    Any other suggestions out there?

  4. Is the disc burned as a VCD or just as data files on a data cd?
if the latter, that may be your problem, If you have only official firmware in your burner then bitsetting wont be your problem. trusted firmwares are obviously from the mfrs site.. NEC?

NEC firmware I'm sure prior to distribution becuase it is advertised at 16x and does everything its supposed to from the day I got it with NO firmware added by me.

Disc was not burned as VCD. I just added mpeg1 movies to the project and burned the disc as a DVD movie so it should be a +RW as the disc is.

  6. I use modded firmware on my 3550 and, after setting the bit on +RWs to DVD-ROM, have no problem playing the discs on my old Toshibas. These players are really fussy and regularly spit out anything other than DVD-Rs.

Are you sure you have set the bits correctly?

I'm using factory firmware. Didnt set the bits...or even see options. May be buried in a submenu though. Using default settings for everything. I wouldnt even know what
settings to use with bitsetting....or what settings the Panasonic machine would prefer. Then again...if I tailor settings to play in that machine....the resulting disc might not play in another...which I havent tested yet as I dont have another standalone.

Not an issue. Bitsetting allows +RWs to be read as DVD-ROMs, which all players can handle. Bitsetting is not machine dependent, in fact it has nothing to do with the player. It is determined by the burner. If your Panny doesn't play a bitset DVD+RW, another machine probably will.

I also use a Panasonic DVD-recorder. It only plays DVD+R/RW if the disc it is bitset to DVD-ROM-type. Then from the description of the functions of your DVD-recorder Panasonic does not describe the ability to play plain MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video files from a DVD burned as data disc. So if you use the DVD-video profile of Nero it just presets the two required subdirectories: "AUDIO_TS" and "VIDEO_TS" and it expects the user to fill the "VIDEO_TS" subdirectory with a valid set of DVD-video files. You cannot just plainly fill these directories with "movie1.mpg" etc.. You would have to produce a DVD-video structure with e.g. Ulead-MovieFactory which includes a conversion of the audio track to 48000 Hz sampling rate if it had been sampled at a different sampling rate like 44000 Hz like it is used for VCD's.

If you already had produced a valid DVD-video-structure and it plays if you record it onto a DVD-R or DVD+R well then the only chance is to try if the bitsetting to DVD-ROM helps.
Bitsetting is available in Nero Version7 if your DVD-writer supports it, but is not available in Nero 5 or earlier. I am not sure about Nero 6.

    Good luck!

I'll check Nero again for bitsetting options...but when I looked around last time I burned an RW trying to find the "finalize" checkbox (which i found doesnt appear with a +RW) I dont recall seeing bitset options. If the only way I can play +RW movies is to set to -R then I'll have to check Nero again. Could be in a submenu somewhere.

As for dropping mpg1 files on a dvd disc...it works. I recorded a few tv shows in mpeg1 with my wintv Go card and added them to a dvd +R project then burned the disc as a dvd movie in Nero7. The mpeg1 movies played fine on the Panasonic machine.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
