  1. Sorry if this is a repost, but I really didn't know what to search for. My problem is that my laptop does not have a firewire port, but I want to transfer my video on my mini camcorder to my hard drive. I had no idea that this would be such a hassle, I thought USB was compatible with practically everything under the sun. Any suggestions?

Camcorders really only output full DV quality images via the Firewire port (as data stream), so you really need a firewire adapter.

Has nothing to do with "compatibility".

Look for a PCMCIA card that has firewire (or a FW/USB2 combo card). There are a number of choices and it's not that expensive (?? ~$50 US ??).

Any other way and you're greatly compromising the quality.

You didn't say you cared about video quality.

Sure you can transfer video over USB at CIF 352x240/288 or less. Worth about as much as a BA in english

Actually there is one expensive cable that you could use to this task. This cable will send DV over USB2 through non standard adapter and a proprietary application. It will work, but it is not recommended. http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-527950.html

Getting a firewire pcmcia card will give the best results at the best price.
