i assembled a new computer using a chaintech kt600 board and a xp2900 cpu with a 400 mhz bus. i used 400 mhz ram 512 mb. it would power up and post so that i could load the os. but during the process of loading programs which call for a computer restart the computer would power up but would not post. Sometimes if i would wait 15 minutes and try again it would post. sometimes a few hours would have to pass. once the computer started it worked great as long as i did not try to restart it. Now my son loaded an app and restarted the computer. after letting it sit for a day it still would not post. i installed a backup board which does not let the cpu run at full speed due to a decrease in bus (266 mhz). the chaintech was a brand new board. Anyone have a similar problem and a solution or anyinformation as to what is happening ? I would hate to discard a new board.

Does that board have onboard video or either AGP or PCI video card? It could be marginal video card if you're using one similar to an older 8MB AGP card I had on a MSI board system. In my case it would boot normally but intermittent problems with display or program function were experienced. I tried another 64 MB AGP card from another system that cured the problem. If you have onboard video, a BIOS update might fix the problem, or you could disable onboard video and install a video card.

Do you have any other memory to try in case memory now installed is the problem? If it's not video or memory issue, then there's likely a mobo problem. You should be able to RMA to manufacturer if it's the mobo. You might try calling mobo manufacturer support too to see if they might be able to help diagnos the problem if all the above suggestions fail. Recently I contacted MSI support on a new MSI board, and they helped find the problem very quickly.
