    Hi!
the same vendor who told me that an internal drive will be damaged easier than an external one when travelling (see this post: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=305737 ) told me that Lite-on and BenQ dvd writers, or general drives I do not remember, are not very good. I told him that I read good posts about lite on and benq, he answered that single persons do not have a real chance to test many drives and have a rich statistic. He installs and sell many many drives, and He saw that lite on and ben q have usually more problemas than lg or others.
It is also true that we are in argentina and here manufacturers send all the trash they canīt send otherwhere. You can check lg global site to see which model of dvd writer they are selling now, and then check lg argentine site. You will find just two models, which there were not on the global site because they were discontinued in first world, and if you check in this forum to see comments, they were changed by other model because had some defect...
So, maybe lite on and ben q in argentina are very bad...
Any comment? BEcouse I am going to choose a dvd writer soon...

  2. Lite-On bought BenQ recently so I imagine they are consolidating models.I personally have a BenQ 1640 and like it.

I could be wrong, but Benq and Lite-On are unlikely to be dumping second rate merchandise anywhere. If the units have the same warranty as other international units, they would have problems with returns that would reflect back on their reputation and end up costing them money.

If you are getting older units there, that may be an import problem. But the quality should be the same as everywhere else. If not, contact the burner company and ask them directly. From the earlier information about your vendor, I sort of doubt his sources and his information.

    Sounds like your run-of-the-mill shit-for-brains self-proclaimed "expert".

LiteOn is easily one of the better burners, along with LG, Pioneer and maybe NEC. It is an excellent drive both for burning and testing media. LiteOn deserves a lot of respect for what they have done for CD and DVD burning through the years.

On the other hand, it is true that BenQ is not one of your better drives. There are a number of problems, ranging from lifespan to burn quality to reader capabilities. But it's more likely a coincidence that he thinks the drive is less that stellar, moreso than a representation of his supposed knowledge. If you guess enough, you eventually have to get something right.

It also need be said that selling products, and having actual knowledge on products, are separate realities.

For the record, "external" drives are nothing more than "internal" drive in an enclosure of some sort.

    Right...
If you are getting older units there
Not only old... Go to lg global site or US site a, d see how many drives there are. Go to lg argentine site and will see two. One is a discontinued product wich had problems hand need firmware upgrade to function well...
Anyway, nothing to do, or I buy from internet, which I donīt want because I wll suffer more if drive will have problem, or I must first go to the shop and se what they can get, and then check internet to see what is better...
    And i will do so...

I've got a BenQ 1655 that accurately rips DVDs faster than anything else I've ever seen. VERY high-quality burns for something in the low price-range. LightScribe is cool, takes too long though... Have had no problems with it using the newest firmware and Nero 6 with all updates.

Have read reviews mentioning short service life etc... Use mine ALOT with no problems. Seems like it's hit or miss with all optical drives. Something's just a little off... and they don't work. Seems common with free-standing CD / DVD players as well. You just have to hope for a good one.

  8. On the damage issue, is this a laptop or a desktop? Laptop drives are definitely different than desktop and/or enclosure mounted drives. Basically, the laptop drive has no metal box around it. It all gets back to how the drive is mounted, the "shock absorbers" are just little rubber washers or strips. A good quality, RIGID, well-padded, carrying case is the real solution to your problem.

As far as the quality of individual drives, this is extremely variable, your supplier is correct that most people do not have the numbers of experience to have any useful information. Simply ask how the warranty is handled. Do you walk into the store with a broken drive and receive a new one, or have to wait for shipping exchange? If he has them in stock, there should be immediate exchange. If not, you might as well order it over the internet.

And yes, inferior products are quite often dumped in smaller markets. The action is driven by simple dollars and cents. Cost of a few aggravated customers with limited connections to major markets versus cost of scrapping large numbers of product. It's called Business.
