help on basics in converting avi to dvd

Hello, as you can see iIm a newbie in video convertions. Never thought of all the posibble formats that you can convert.

I have lots of .avi files and want to burn them to see them in my DVD player. I use Toast Titanium, is the best thing... But, I want to add subtitles to some foreign .avi files. I have ffmpegx. I can see that in the summary tab you have dozens of options to convert the .avi to. What is the default file option to convert a .avi file with subtitles to watch on a DVD player???
