Using WindowsXP on a PC, the firewire connection to my Sony DCR-HC21 video camera is not recognized by either MovieMaker or Pinnacle. Not even that "ping" you get get when you connect a device. The USB connection works fine.
The camera is the only device I have that uses a firewire, so the standard switch-to-see-if-it-works test isn't applicable. Device manager says I have the IEEEE 1394 controllers.
How do I tell if the problem is in the camera or in the CPU?
Something in the back of my mind is saying that there's some problem with Sony cameras and firewires, but I can't recall what it is.

Could be a lot of reasons, first thing I would try is hooking it to a different computer and/or try hooking another cam with a different firewire cable to your computer. If it's simply a bad cable you could spend days trying to troubleshoot it which of course is going to get you no where, try the simple things first.
