This is as newbie a question as you can get, but ...
I've been downloading some of the tools. Some of them (DVDDecrypter, ImgBurn) bring up a window and a wizard to proceed with the downloading and, when done, place an icon on the desktop. However, some others, (RipIt4Me, FixVTS) at first don't seem to do anything, but then bring up a window saying it's a zip file. One of the options on this window is to 'Extract all folders'. I do this and it tries to put it in a temporary internet file. I change it to a permanent file, and it does indeed put the .exe files into there, but I don't get an icon on the desktop nor does it show up in START--->All Programs.
Am I doing this right?

Some programs are just a gui, meaning that they dont install anything but operate from the file itself. Its great cos they are usually free and use very little system resources. Just make a folder and extract all the contents of the program into the folder.
you can then make a short cut to the exe and copy it to your program list.
VirtualDub is a great example of GUI software -
Those are .exe files. If you want to run them from the desktop, just create a shortcut to the .exe file and put that on your desktop or extract the file to the desktop. They aren't a program that has an install file like the others.
If you want them on your start menu, you can right click on RipIt4Me.exe or the other and select 'Pin to Start menu'. Then you can access it that way. They won't show up in 'programs' as they aren't installed. -
Here's a guide for adding programs to the All Programs Start menu.
