  1. I have lots of 4:3 video files, that i want to convert to 16:9 for use in my psp, which supports a maximum resolution of 480:272.IF i encode them preserving ar,i get res 368x272 which puts black bars at the side, which is an awfull eyesight!

    What can i do?

Perhaps I haven't had enough morning coffee yet, but I think your only other choice really is to resize & crop to get to the 480x272 (without bars of course). Personally, I wouldn't do that, as you may end up chopping off important parts of the frame.. But, considering the small size of any portable player's screens, I could see why you don't want to add bars to pad to the correct ratio.

Have a read of this and see if it is worth the effort.

  5. I've tried cropping but the result is noticable. The thing i'm concered are not the black bars per se,but the fact that there are on the right and left of the screen creating a squared viewed, instead of being on top and bottom creating a widescreen one.

  7. I got a little confused. So would it be better to encode to a resolution of 480x352,or to encode to 480x272 and display a distorted ar?

I forgot to mention, new version of pmp allow files bigger than 480x272 but they lag more, due to not being well optimized.

Do you want the image to look good, but have black bars, or look distorted. You are the one who will be watching it, not us.

The joys of 4:3 in a 16:9 world.

Personally, I would take the bars over a distorted picture anytime. Otherwise, what's the point of watching it ?

  10. You can resize it on the PSP. By hitting one of the buttons and adding two white bars on the right and left side of the PSP. So you will watch it in 4:3
