Two media sales caught my eye this week in the Best Buy circular.

    Memorex 16x 100 Pack DVD-/+R Media for $29

    or

    Verbatim 16x DVD+R LS 30 Packs for $19

COMPUSA has the 100 pack spindles of SONY DVD-/+ for $29.00. One has to wonder if those SONY spindles are TAIYO YUDEN. Probably not huh!

I'll just have to check out BEST BUY to see if their SONY 100 packs of DVD-R/+ media are TAIYO YUDEN and if they are I'll have them price match COMPUSA.

I don't think any of the Sony 100 packs are made in Japan. All the ones I've seen, and all the reports I've read, indicate that they are made in Taiwan with Sony MIDs.

I can vouch for the 100 packs I've seen at Circuit City and My local Compusa. They are MIT, not MIJ.
with SONY...codes. Comparable to MIT TDK, about a 3%
    coaster rate per 100.

Any good DVD-RW sales this week?

Office Depot has Maxell 15pk DVD -/+RW,
buy one get one free for $15.
    Office Depot media sale
they also have the memorex on sale for the same in 50packs,
not 100 packs [ still makes 100 discs total though ]

The Verbatim's at OfficeMax are the standard surface media and come in at $1.99. The Lightscribe Verbatim's at Best Buy are only $0.66 per at $19.99 per 30 pack. I know I'd like the standard plain surface on the ones at OfficeMax more since I don't have/use a Lightscribe printer.

Has anyone used the Lightscribe media on a standard recorder? I'm guessing it would be basically the same media with a different surface, in addition to the Lightscribe media being rated at 16x. I've got a Pioneer DVR-110D so I think 8x is as good as I would see.

I have used Verbatim Lightscribe Media in my NEC3550. No problems burning at the rated speed of 16x. I do not own any Lightscribe drives but use them on a regular basis as alot of customers seem to think they are neat until they realize it takes almost a half hour to get a decent image print.

No Verbatim in the US is TY. The DVD media will be MCC. The CD-Rs are a different story however.

    For what its worth:
The Maxell DVD-RWs at Office Depot on sale this week
are MIT, and the code on them is RITEKW01.
    ;-p

May try wal-mart today to see if they will price match
Office Depot and see if there's is better...

I think ROF must have meant Memorex - otherwise that is bad news if true.

Yeah, true, Staples does not carry Verbatim brand, not for almost a year now. They clearanced out all Verbatim stock long, long ago. I think 4x was the last time they had Verbatim, maybe 8x at most.

They downsized, carry few brands now. SONY is the only one worth anything these days. Everything else is CMC or Hong Kong crap.

  20. Lordsmurf, what are your thoughts on 16x Sony Brand media [manufacturer: sony]? I've read in the media forums that some people were having problems with 16x Sony.

People everywhere are having trouble with 16x, period. Regardless of who made the disc. And it's in DVD burners or in DVD recorders.

The 16x media was all rushed to market. Add to the fact that 16x burning is not as stable as lower burn speeds (nor is it all that much faster).

    The issue is firmware support.

Now, I have to say that MCC DVD+R and SONY DVD+R media tends to burn well in most drives, regardless of firmware support. Even when a default strategy is applied, it seems to do okay.

The SONY media itself is quite good, not much quality variance at all....

....unlike CMC media, which also has chronic firmware issues, though it affects anything from 1x to 16x media in their case.

    Just a followup and addon:

follow-up: Wal-Mart does NOT price match on Percent offs or Buy1, Get1 Free deals. Only on lower price.
So no go on matching Office Depot.

    That being said:
Walgreens announced 25pks of Sony DVD -R/+Rs for $8.99.,
    in today's circular.
Walgreen's is MIT ( most likely SONYXXX code)
but my Wal-Marts 50 and under packs are all still
    MIJ!!
    woo-hoo!
    Wal-Mart 's 25paks are $15. so that's $6 a spindle roughly saved.

  23. Thanks to lordsmurf's comments, I went to OfficeMax to pick up some Verbatim, but I was a little surprised. I've taken the very simplistic view that I want to buy MIJ and avoid MIT. The Verbatim DVD-R's at OfficeMax were all MIT. I bought a pack and ran DVD Info on them, and the report is:
    MCC 03RG20
which, according to nomorecoasters.com's opinion is 1st class media.
So....my simplistic view that MIJ is the main source of 1st class media is wrong?

Your simplistic view is correct. You just run across one of the exceptions to this rule. Verbatim branded media of MIT origin is a 1st class media. I'm speaking of MCC 03RG20 and MCC 004 specifically even though MKM dl and older 8x MCC sl media is very good as well.

MIT RICOHJPN is also great media but I don't seem to getting any of it lately.

Know any brands that it's being sold under.

Blank media rules are plagued by exceptions these days. Every rule has 2-3 of them. The "Japan" rule is the safe one. But if you are able and willing to learn there exceptions, there are a few of them, absolutely. MCC, SONY, TDK, and some others.

There is also the Singapore rule for DL media.

I also picked up some packs of Verbatim today. Very good deal. In fact, I had a $10 off $50 OfficeMax coupon in the mail, so I used that. Even better deal!
