We have tapes of old movies that have been on TV and want to copy them to DVDs. When we tried to remove the commercials - we could do that okay, but each time it started over, from the beginning of the movie. Is there a simpler way to do this?

    ??????

We need a little more information. What are you using to copy the tapes? Are you using a settop dvd recorder? Are you using a capture card on the computer? Do you have a computer dvd burner?

What I have done with my settop dvd recorder (no harddrive on my unit) is to copy it to the computer and then edit the commercials out and author a new dvd.

Use dvd decrytper to copy to the computer (make sure you have file splitting set to none and don't include chapters).

Then use a program like mpg2cut2 to snip out the commercials. Some authoring programs like tmpgenc dvd author can edit the commercials in the authoring program itself.

Then you take the edited mpg and make a new dvd out of it. After its authored burn it and you'll have the same show on dvd without commercials.

    Very effective

Capturing to your PC using xxx capture card ?
What software are you using ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

We have a TruTech DVD recorder and that is what we are using. I have a DVD burner on my new computer but have not tried to use it yet. Would appreciate someone telling me the name of a good software program to use - simple to use. The software that came on my computer was a trial basis only and it's about to expire.

Since it doesn't sound like you have a capture card, you could use DVD-RW to record the video onto DVD, then rip it to your computer with DVD Decrypter. If you want to stick with freeware, use Mpeg2Schnitt or Mpg2Cut2 to cut out the comercials. Then use DVDAuthorgui to reauthor back to DVD.
