Can you play dvd's on a dvd burner? Someone please help a clueless newbie.

Got myself a NEC ND-3550A (bare drive from newegg) and put it in my computer. No problems, everything seems fine but when I tried to put in a dvd to see if it would play I got this:
Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

Could someone tell me what it it I need to install. Thanks,

You would need to install a codec like the one in powerdvd, or media player classic.

you probably need in addition to an mpeg-2 codec to set the region of the drive to 1 for the u.s. right click on the drive icon select properties/hardware/highlight the drive/click properties down near the bottom and then dvd region.

Select standart, or basic, download it , install it, and you should be all set.

Thanks to both of you. Downloaded Windows Media Player Classic and it worked perfectly. Also, I would have never figured out that I needed to set the region code. Worked perfectly. Appreciate the help.

Have not read all posts here - would recommend you download and install VLC player.

That's a basic but very reliably software that plays DVD and pretty much all video and audio files you can throw at it.
