rm conversion needs mplayer to decode,
    so use a mencoder preset.

just tried this, came up with error, something along the lines of the screen width needs to be changed to a number divisible by 16, so i put it to 16:9, and then same thing...

i dont know if this is the prob, but when installing ffmpegx, i found the three xtra bits and put them in the right folders, but whenever i open the program it keeps asking me to locate the mpeg2enc? is that causing the prob?

    thanks

The video size has to be multiples of 16; so 640x352 is valid, 600x338 is invalid.

No, the mpeg2enc binary is only used when encoding to .mpg, not .avi.

ok, so i tried that, still the same thing.

i will quikly walk through what i am/and think im ment to be doing, if you see a prob please point it out:

first drop my rm file into the drop box [rm file is about 34 mb],then go into the video tab, and put the video codec to any of the mencoder settings[divx 3, xvid, mpeg 4]. i then change the framerate to pal, and the autosize to dvd, and the target file size to 900mb. then i press encode. the progress window comes up, and it takes a sec for the window to figure out whats going on, then it says it is finished immediatley. i try to open the file, but the computer then does not recognise it?

sorry to keep bothering you with the same q. buloo

First, try the Play button to see if ffmpegX can decode the rm file. If it plays but won't convert, then have a look at the process log ().

right if it plays it can be converted (likewise if droped and recognized as real file it works also) however, the problem in some instances remains (i recall a comment here somewhere that larger rm's may not convert properly) and that is exactly what i end with:
prox the first 75% of a rm of some 200mb of size is converted ok
as to the remaining 25% the sound is totally scrambled

i have been through all sorta testing of real libs, old newer, the ones from helix and so on
in short, the best to do on G4's and newer macs is to forget about any of the older real-codecs and to create aliases to the contents of an installed RealPlayer that works (package contents > ... > HelixPlugins > Codecs sym linked to Application Support > ffmpegX > reallib)

so far so good but then there are these rm's which won't convert -- not if not their headers are cleaned up. such files i may, or may not end up with from streaming via mplayer, that is

    mplayer rtsp://adress... -dumpstream -dumpfile filepath...

it is in particular such file which wont convert properly in ffmpegX as described above
btw the files are converted ok on a PC with some wincrappy thing (but quality pretty bad as expected)
again, it is the audio part which is messed up, the video is fine

I'm having problems with converting rmvb files to mp4. Mplayer hangs when I tried dropping a rmvb file to ffmepgX. Any one can help me?

    Hi Cyanwater,

May I know what Mac are you using. I can just see that you're using a 1.6GHz Mac.
I also encountered a problem in rmvb conversion.
    See: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=301195
It seems to me that people using G4 / G5 can do the conversion, including me.
    Intel Mac may have problems.
