  1. Has anybody ever compared the encoding quality of both TMPGEnc and CCE SP?

I have CCE SP, and it does a pretty good job. But I was wondering if anyone has compared the two.

If the general consensus is that TMPGEnc produces a better quality MPEG-2, I will probably use that instead.

    Thanks!!!!!

Actually, the consensus has been that CCE is better at MPEG-2 and TMPGenc is better at MPEG-1. TMPGenc will take almost anything as input and CCE definitely will not do that.

I recently had an opportunity to use TMPGenc-Xpress version 3 something for an MPEG-2 encode and I think that the quality was pretty good, better than I expected from TMPGenc. I didn't subject it to any kind of scientific analysis and I don't have time to convert the same video with CCE for comparison, but TMPGenc-Xpress seemed to me to be better than the older version I used a few years ago.

I've seen a few guys who have insisted that CCE is terrific for MPEG-1 encodes, which goes against the opinions of most people. Maybe you could do a comparison encode yourself and see what you think. TMPGenc is certainly a better priced product than CCE.

  3. Sorry, my input format is .avi with a Divx 5 codec. I'm looking to output to MPEG-2.

    There is no concenscess!

It's simply a matter of preferance based apon your source. My preferences for my sources are:

    Mpeg-2 from dv-avi 30i

    1) TMPGEnc
    2) MainConcept
    3) CCE

    Mpeg-2 from dv-avi 30p:

    1) CCE
    2) Mainconcept
    3) TMPGEnc

Obviously your preferances may vary, but there is no concencess.
