  1. Please offer your suggestions

Looking for a PCI _OR_ standalone capture card with RCA / S-Video Inputs via Firewire (or USB).

It should have hardware encoding and work with products such as Win Movie Maker, Virtual Dub.

I used to have the Canopus ADVC-100 and was really happy with it (until it stop functioning due to a short).

Should I just get the canopus ADVC-110 (updated model of 100) ?

  2. If you want the best quality captures then yes to getting another Canopus ADVC, Plus you never know you might run into audio sync issues with another capture card that doesn't have locked audio feature.

I'm also looking into getting a new capture card, I've been recommended the MAtrox AXIO SD which will be primarily used for DVD creation. I've not got much experience on Premiere and was wondering if anyone could tell me how quickly and easily it is to author straight from the timeline? Also what is Premieres native capture format? thanks....

Also take a look at the ADS Pyro AV/Link. It's basically the same thing as the Canopus ADVC 100 for about $100.00 less in price.

    Alright.

    Now I'm definitely confused.

I'm currently building my system - mainly for VHS capture - and, from all the reading I've done here, had talked myself into a Hauppauge WinTV PVR-350.

Am I shooting myself in the foot?

The Hauppage should do a fine job for that...

Do all of these do hardware encoding or software? I was told Canopus is hardware.

Hauppauge is also hardware and very good I might add
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

I have captured SVHS/VHS with a PVR-250 for several years now. PQ is excellent, but I found that an external TBC/Frame Synchronizer (or DVD Recorder in passthru) is necessary in order to avoid audio/video sync issues.

Hmm.... I never had synch issues with my pvr250. I had it for years until I sold it and bought my fusion hdtv card.

    Hi,
I've been very satisfied with my Plextor ConvertX PX-M402U USB 2.0, It has MPEG 1,2, and DivX hardware encoding, works well with VirtualDub and also with Nero-Vision Express, and several other TV Scheduling apps like GB-PVR, Chris-TV, Beyond TV etc. it cost me 122.00 CDN on sale. I was very skeptical about the DivX hardware encoding but it really is quite good.

For many situations, it is probably just fine.

I was capturing S-VHS home video master tapes into one hour files. Often there would be blank gaps between recording segments within each hour. Sometimes the audio/video skew by the end of an hour was very significant. Sometimes it was very slight. Sometimes it was fine. But trying to verify whether skew existed was driving me crazy, and recapturing would not eliminate the problem.

The TBC-3000 completely eliminated this issue.
That's why DVD Recorders have built in frame synchronizers.
