    Hello all,

    I have the following problem:

I'm trying to capture from a tape to PC and i'm losing frames (both with Virtual VCR and VirtualDubVCR). The tape is new but the recording is old. I dont experience dropped frames with new recordings.

Now, my questions is: if i'll try to transfer from tape to disc with DVD recorder will i have the same dropped frames issue? also would there be any PAL/NTSC issues i should know about.

thank you and sry if this topic was brought b4.

First, are you capturing via USB1.1, USB2.0, Firewire, etc..? Second, are you trying to capture to the same HD as your software and Windows is on, or do you have a secondary HD. All capture card manufacturers and video capture manufacturers recommend having a secondary HD, used for nothing but storage, and video capture, and they recommend that you keep that drive defragmented. USB1.1 could also be a problem with dropping frames, yet some people still report good results.

Hi and thanx for ur reply.

I'm not using any capturing device. I'm just connecting my VCR through Composite connection to my Radeon video card and using WDM drivers.

You didn't answer my question about HD's. Do you have one or two. Are you capture to your primary HD, or secondary?

read their computer description and you will see they have 2 hard drives.

Ar.Pi, you DO have a capture device..the fact that you are able to CAPTURE the video and get dropped frames makes this very obvious.

I see you have a 200gb and an 80gb...make sure you are capturing to the drive that does not have your OS loaded on it. Also, you might want to disconnect from the internet and disable any anti-virus or other non-essential programs running in the background. This will free up resources. IF you havent rebooted in a while..do that as well.

Also, what are you capturing to? Are you trying to capture to mpeg on the fly..are you capturing uncompressed .avi?

i am hoping the 80gb is the system drive and the 200gb is your scratch drive as video takes up a lot of space and fills up hard drives quickly.

i'm capturing to the 80GB which is my spare drive without OS.

I'm going to try and capture uncompressed, since maybe compressing on the fly might cause this droped frames (i tried capturing straight to Xvid).

thanx for ur replies i'll keep u posted after i'll try again.

    p.s.

how much space per minute it takes for uncompressed capturing?

Please see my questions in the same forum. I have tried the following programmes to capture: Virtualdub (quite good, but the final product sometimes has a "jitter") I thought iuVCR produced the best quality, but I had some synchronisation (audio/video) issues with one or two recordings, especially when the light is bad. I did not like Virtual VCR.

I am capturing with the Huffy codec

Uncompressed RGB with a full D1 frame is nearly 2GB/min. Uncompressed YUY2 will be about 2/3 of that. You probably won't be able to capture either of those without dropping frames because your HD won't be able to keep up.

Try using HuffYUV or Picvideo MJPEG for your captures.
