In my answer to you I said to use the "subrip" srt file format in the save as dialogue. I have used it many times in tests over the past week or so and it is accepted by sub2divx. I too have the dvp-642 and I can assure you that the subs work and can be turned on or off with the subtitle button on the player.

I too am experimenting with subs from a variety of sources. Some extracted from my DVD and others captured from tv via Graphedit Closed caption converted to (srt) subs.

btw) If you don't want to imbed the subs just give them the same name
    ie--- movie1.avi movie1.srt

Then with the dvp-642 go to the menu and highlight the (srt) sub file (It should not have a mark on it.
Press subtitle on your remote and you will get a message about the sub. Then move to the avi and press play. The subs should be active.

This also works but is not as convenient.

When you open your .srt subtitle in Subtitle Workshop, go to Tools>Information and Errors>Various Information.
There you will see all info about your subtitle. If it says Subrip at the top, then your subtitle is in .srt format.
If you want to learn how to use Subtitle Workshop, go to Help and there you have a complete Manual with all the options explained clearly. I suggest to print this manual and keep it handy when working with Subtitle Workshop.

It is essential that you read all other similar topics already discussed on this forum about subtitles and Philips dvp-642. There you would see informations about firmware upgrades and supported subtitle formats.

Type "Subtitle 642" and read the results - many useful info and hints from other members and users of dvp-642.
