I've noticed that many new DVD players and recorders are being released without S-Video jacks. They have composite and component jacks but no S-Video output. Is this a new cost reduction move or is there some other reason?

Cost reduction. Good equipment still has it.

A good reason to avoid them. It couldn't add much more than $0.50 to the cost. What other compromises have they made?

I usually feed S-Video to a secondary monitor.

  7. Something funny: according to http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Articles/VideoConnectors/VideoConnectors.asp :

All DVD players are capable of downconverting a component video signal into a more suitable format for display on the current generation of consumer display devices. The first such downconversion step is to S-Video, which is a connector that will always be found on any DVD player.
Guess they should update their page, eh??
