For those of you familiar with the HR-S9800U....

I have a fair number of family videos to transfer to DVD, as well as some VHS movies (some with macrosision) that I'd like to backup. I recently purchased a HR-S9800U (without remote), which is being shipped. I am looking at buying the JVC DR-M100S DVD recorder.

First, both the 9800 and M100 have noise filtering. Will the two noise filtering circuits interfere with other? Does one need to be turned off? If so, can I do that without the remote (HR-S9800U)? Will not having the remote cause me any other problems (I will be using the 9800 exclusively for playing back S-VHS and VHS tapes and some VHS-C tapes (I have an adaptor) for capture).

Also, will the TBC in the 9800 remove macrovision from the old movies I want to back up, or would I need an external TBC unit?

Thanks in advance for your assistance. Much appreciated.

The 9800 has front panel Menu buttons, so not having a remote shouldn't be a problem. Compatible remotes show up on EBAY all the time...

The TBC and DNR function together in the 9800. You'll likely want to use the TBC, so the DNR will have to be ON as well. A front panel button turns them ON and OFF.

Each DNR system may soften the image a bit, so using both might be excessive. It depends upon the source and your personal preference.

Macrovision is not removed by either of these units.

Thanks for the response. Does anyone know if DNR can be turned off in the DR-M100S?

    Any other comments?

DNR in the JVC units is half LSI chipset, half JVC conversion. There is not off switch, nor is one really needed. It's an intelligent filter, I've never seen it make source worse.

  5. I believe the 9800 has a s-video out. As reminder, I believe if you input it into your recorder, the s-video does not have filters. Some say you may get a better picture because of the filters with standard composite cable. I have the 7800 and have used the S-Video. I experimented and couldn't notice any real difference.

    Not true.

The LSI and other filters are unrelated to input. The only time the filters seem to disengage is when you try to use 352x240 resolutions. The LSI filters do not remove chroma noise at that resolution.

  7. Really? I've read this several times in a many posts in the AVS forum. I take it back; I guess I am not certain anymore.

Time has shown me that site is not very accurate (user members) when it comes to DVD recorders. When "everybody" thinks Panasonic makes the best DVD recorder, and all others are terrible, there's clearly a problem. Lots of bad information there, on this topic. Pay no attention. You're better off at video-related sites. Leave that one for talking about fancy home theatre setups (big TV sets, home audio, etc).

  9. I wonder if you guys are talking about the same filters? AVS may be talking about the composite to Y/C separation filters that are not on the s-video ports.

I don't see how the comb filters would have anything to do with the image processing filters. Somebody is confused somewhere.
