    Hi..
    I have a one hour AVI movie file..
    i would have like to make chapters or key points in the AVI that i can jump to easily.. is it possible to do so without a conversion of the movie?

    No. Either the new divx format (which almost completely lacks playback support) or standard Video DVD.

    If you want to playback on computer ogm or mkv are useable. No conversion.
