1/ You can have QuickTime 7 (Pro) installed besides QuickTime X. QuickTime 7 is even included on your OS disc as an optional install.
2/ You don't need Rosetta for ffmpeg (or ffmpegX for that matter). (Besides, the whole point of Rosetta was that it runned without user interaction, seamlessly in the background, solving problems you didn't know about.)
3/ The fact that VisualHub is retired only means "no new features or fixes". It still does what it did back then.
4/ D-Vision (free) is an option
5/ MPEG Streamclip (free) is another option
6/ ffmpegX has an "avimerge" binary in its application package for command line use, if you want/need more options than the GUI provides. -
