    Hi guys,

I have a DVD (a rare, deleted edition) which has a fairly deep scratch on the surface which prevents it playing properly. I have tried to copy the data from disk and paste it onto a folder in the hard drive but I continually receive error messages in the process. I have also tried to back up the disc with DVD Shrink but it has problems reading it too, and stops the process when files cant be accessed.

Can anyone recommend a good recovery program which will help me salvage the data on the disc in order for me to back up the contents?

    Thanks in advance.

    As lordsmurf stated ... but

Go into setting's and enable the option to "ignor" read error's
This dose work is some case's , but you should play back what is saved too hd , just to make sure there are no problem's .

    If this produce's problem's : try

1: Take it to video hire center that has scratch removal equipment (before this , read note's below line) .

    or

2: Use products like Wipeout , or Scratch wizard manual cd/dvd restoration kit (read note's below line first) .

Both of these are "do it yourself" , and may require some elbow grease ... I personally use wipeout .

    ---------------------------------

If dvd decrypter failed in any way , forget iso buster , you'd be wasting your money .

What can not be recovered using the above method's , or any method , are disc's with pin hole's in the written side (put up to light to check) ... and there have been occasion's where the written side had taken a hit ... leaving indent's in the written side (these may not be recoverable) .

Should such event's have taken place ... you will need to source a replacement .

Many local Video Stores, especially those that are big on games, can resurface the disc. My local place charges $2. Their $2400 machine has about a 95% success rate on damaged discs.

  6. around here, it's a LITTLE more expensive, i think 3 bux a disc, but still worth it...and yes, they should be able to clean it up, provided obviously, that it's not like cracked or something like that...

also, if you wanted to invest into a disc doctor...they do work pretty good, though they are a pain in the neck, and can take quite some time to completely restore a disc (looking back at it, i shouldve opted for the motorized one)

    Update;

Okay, I have finally created an image of the disk, it took over 30 hours with ISO Buster! to produce a 858kb .tao file (the DVD in question is Dual layer and has around 8GB of data on it).

What do I do next with it? I want to try to make a duplicate if possible, I have some blank Dual Layer disks but i'm not sure what to do with the .tao file.

Also, i've bought myself a motorised disk repair tool, can anyone tell me if this bit of kit is any good? and can i use this on a dual layer disc?

I've actually had DVDFab Decryptor plug away on discs that Decryptor wouldn't finish. The one advantage was the dvd was ripped to Audio_TS and Video_TS folders, making it more manageable.

I did have one recently that was in poor enough shape the data at the end of the disc was unreadable even after ripping with DVDFab Decryptor. I finally pulled the main movie out with TDA and re-authored the dvd. Plays fine.

I have had some that DVDShrink would go ahead and work on - in movie only mode - leaving the features and other items out corrected the reading problems. Have you tried ripping only the movie files in DVD Decryptor?

That tao file won't do you any good .

Go back and do what I said with dvd decrypter (ignore read error's) , set to file mode when it rip's , not iso .

Then if that dosent work , check disk for physical damage ... some hire center's do provide disc resurfacing , here it is $5.00 and up , depending on which one you go too .

If that fail's , then you have lost it .

  10. You can also try CdRoller. It does wonders with scratched media.

Here is the link for a trial copy

    Update,

I bought myself one of these

I was not impressed with the outcome on a couple of trial discs, it's really quite primative and looks like it may do more damage to the discs than good, not to mention that you have to buff the disc manually with the provided postage stamp sized pad for ages afterwards. I'm going to see if I can get my £30 back from the retailer, and I would not recommend this unit to anyone.

My next port of call is going to be one of these

It's going to set me back £350 (approx $660) but it looks like a solid piece of kit and the support I got from the place that sells them was very professional. I might even be able to repair other peoples discs for a small fee to help fund the purchase.

I'm still going to try the DVD Decrypter program, as I want the best chance of saving the disc, to buy another copy of the DVD would cost about $175 - $200, however I just hope it dosen't take 30 hours to process like ISO Buster did. Will also look at CDRoller.

Thanks for all the help guys, appreciated, will let you know how it pans out.

    Hi
have a look at this it looks similar to the item you were looking at but even with shipping it'll be a lot cheaper.

Well, I figure it's a worthwhile investment for the future.
