Using AutoGK to convert to .avi and Windows Media Player were ruined

Hi,

I have Windows XP.

I had a power surge last night while I was sleeping when my pc was running ripping a DVD. I was using AutoGK and the default player it assigns the rips to is Windows Media Player. I didn't know what the h*ll happened, but thank God for surger suppressors. My pc is ok but the programs that were in use at the time, ie, AutoGK, WMP, codecs, etc, were ruined . . . it took me a while to figure why they weren't working, but eventually I did. I deleted the programs, codecs, etc, and downloaded and installed new ones. I downloaded Windows Media Player v 10 and I didn't like it at all so I decided to uninstall v 10 and reinstall v 9. WMP isn't listed in Add/Remove Programs nor does it have an uninstall. What I usually do with those kinds of programs is search for the name and every file that turns up in the search, I delete. I then run PC onPoint and Reg Seeker and they get rid of the remaining junk. I know it's not the best method but it's worked in the past with no problems.

With WMP, though, I couldn't delete the folder or the files. Every time I did, they immediately came back, and I mean immediately . . . within a blink of an eye. So I thought that I'd just reinstall WMP v9 but I couldn't because I received a message that said "Your version of Windows on this computer already contains a more recent version of Windows Media Plyer. Windows Media Player 9 series setup will now exit." Doing what I had done in the past, I went into safe mode and not only deleted the files, I shredded them, I then ran PC onPoint and Reg Seeker to get rid of invalid paths, shortcuts, etc, rebooted back into safe mode and tried to install v 9 again, but I received the same error message. Now I have no Windows Media Player. I might be able to re-install v 10 but I don't like it at all.

I ran a whole series of virus/malware/adware programs but none of them came up with anything except for CW Shredder. It found a file named CWS.msconfig in safe mode but it didn’t find it in normal start-up. Also, even though I erase my tracks daily, it found a Crucial report that I did about 2 months ago when I wanted to buy some more RAM. . . so much for erasing tracks!?! Other than that, everything else checked out fine so there’s nothing wrong with my pc.

Is there a way that I can re-install v9?

Yes, reinstall windows and ready. :P
I would suggest to use another player. MPC comes in mind.

I have a lot of players but some of my other programs don't work without WPM installed (AutoGK, AVISplit, etc) . . . can't say why, but they don't.

It worked and I have WMP 9 back again even though I made a botched mess of it to begin with. I hope this helps someone else too.
