Or am I copying my double layer discs wrong?
They play fine on the computer but won't play on my Pioneer Elite 59avi

+R DL or -R DL? It DOES make a difference. My player is certainly not high end, but my Philips DVP-642 has minor problems with all -R DL discs but it plays +R DL flawlessly. I also recommend only using Verbatim DL discs, whether you burn +R or -R. You're asking for problems if you use anyone else's.

maybe I'm just burning my discs wrong?
I've been using AnyDVD in the background and ripping using Nero Recode.
Is there a better solution?
also I've been using the Verbatim discs -
It works if you rip the DVD into a ISO file instead of the file method in DVD Decrypter and then use IMGBURN to write to the DL disc
