Hello all ! I bought a Toshiba XS35 and have mixed feelings about it. What I don't like is that you have no control over the audio level inputs. Even when dubbing HDD to DVD. And the other fact that it is only a DVD-R recorder. Anybody have a better unit they would recomend? The price was very good at only 379.00. Help please ! I think I should return it To BB !!!!!

I don't think there is any consumer DVD recorder that has audio level adjustment. The only somewhat-reasonably-priced DVD recorder I know of that has audio level control is the Pioneer PRV-9200 (a PRO unit). I think it costs about $900, though it's still only a -R recorder but it does have other advantages like being able to record both NTSC and PAL.

  4. The Pioneer DVR-531H has input audio level adjustments. It allows from the Initial Setup the selection of the L1, L2, or L3 input with separate audio input level adjustment for each input in 3 dB steps from 0, +3 dB, +6 dB, -3 dB, and -6 dB.

Toshiba RD-XS34 is the only one in Toshiba group that you can control the audio, It a older model but as you can see the newer model are just shells that have only maybe 160GB & HDMI outlets. But missing the good stuff. Pioneer I believe doe the same think I can remember the model. I think 220-225 have the goodies but 235? was a newer model with nothing......

Keep an eye out for the new Pioneer ... model DVR-640H-S ... I don't think it is out just yet but should be any day now.

If it is anything like the last batch (I have the DVR-531H-S and love it) then it should kick ass.

Why would the DVR-640H-S support DL +R if it doesn't even support SL +R? I'm surprised it supports RAM though.

I wish the JVC's had volume control. My cable box is at max volume and still it records the volume a bit on the low side.

  9. I cannot find an English language manual. How is your German?

    and,

It is important to me. I only record to +DL these days. If it says it does, I am selling my 531H.

[edit]Maybe not. Does it say it records to dvd+r DL only in +vr mode?

  10. I did find the English version of the manual.

It can do dvd+r DL but only in +VR mode

John will not like this, LP mode ( four hour ) is now 720 by 480.

This part was disappointing for me. The copy function does not work for either +DL or -DL.

and for the original poster, the new 640H does not have the audio level adjustments of the 531.

The good news is that the price is down to about $350 online which is not bad for a 160 GB hdd unit.

The Pioneer DVR-531H-s does 720x480 up to the 210 minute recording mode ... the next mode is 220 minutes at which point it finally drops down to 352x480 ... whereas the drop from 720x480 to 352x480 should happen in the 140 - 160 minute range.

Only thing I don't like about the 640 model (at least from what I've heard so far) is the lack of audio input adjustment ... that comes in handy for me as some cable TV stations are much lower in volume than others.
