I have looked through the DVD Media Lists, but would appreciate a recommendiation of which media would be the most compatible with older Standard Stand-alone DVD players. I have a Sony DW-Q30A burner.

Simple - dvd-r , burn at 4x , dont put more than 4.3 gig on media (this is the most compatable way)
Then it come's down to media ... forget tdk , there crap now ...datastream work well , though verbatim's should be the most stable of all .
Of course you will here of other brand's from other user's , but for my money , jumping about from brand to brand only give's one more headache's over the long run .
I returned the last batch of tdk's to store when first 3 out of 50 produced a nero error ... simple "what was the error" , and the media was swapped for another brand ... seem's most store's people here know nero well ... -
Taiyo Yuden, enough said. You won't have to worry about wheather one batch is good or not.

Some of your older standalone players will not work with any burned media.
Some will not burn with your burner.
Some will work better DVD-R, some will work better DVD+R. Some will prefer cheap media, Some will want only Made in Japan media.
1x will work better than 4x on some.
Older DVD-players differed more widely in their interpretations of the specs and some were very restrictive.
In my opinion, your question has no answer or 100 answers. -
Unfortunately my own experience fits with your answer - especially the 1x comment.

DVD-R is supposed to have slightly better compatibility. I've personally never seen a player that won't play the TY DVD-Rs I burn with an NEC 3500. I've sent discs to dozens of people without ever having anyone say they didn't play. I don't know about with a Sony (LiteOn) burner.

What are you doing with an older player? Buy a new one. They are cheap. Really cheap.
In my humble opinion, when using good media, (TY, Ver, Max vs junk/cheap discs), compatibility issues with stand alone players come from the burning software not the media. Some software has too many settings/options for the average usrer. Some software is just not that good. It's not the media. It's the burning software. Just my opinion. -

Trying to show home travel movies at my friends' houses. I don't need one; my AV system is computer-controlled.
I'm still on Nero 5.5.9.9. Do you think that is part of my problem? I'm talking about old players.
I also use CDBurnerXP Pro 3. -
Again, just my opinion, but I have had bad experiences with Nero - player compatibility problems. I use Instant Copy. Nobody uses it anymore. I don't even know if it is still available. The reason I use it is for player compatibility. With IC just don't have compatibility issues.

Nero sucks. I had a first generation Panasonic player, I still have a second generation player, they both play DVD-R discs fine. Maybe it's the Sony burner too.
